Blog 8: Emma-O

Japan: Momoyama period (1568-1615)
Wood, lacquer, gold, and glass

According to the following website: http://www.whiterosesgarden.com/Nature_of_Evil/Underworld/UNDR_Deities/UNDR-D_asia/UNDR_emma-o_japan-buddhist.htm

Emma-O was a Japanese Buddhist Ruler and Judge of the Dead.  It's terrifying to think you could be met by this guy to judge your past life! My experiences with the Buddha's I've seen have always looked peaceful and even jolly, this was the first one that looked scary.

Blog 7: Martele Dressing Table and Stool , 1899

William C. Codman (American, born England, 1839-1921)
Gorham Manufacturing Company
(American, active 1831-present)
Providence, Rhode Island
Silver, glass, fabric and ivory

I absolutely love this piece.  It's incredibly elegant and looks like it belonged to someone of very high status.  I can respect furniture like this because it's a piece that has very a specific purpose and that would be for someone to spend time on making themselves look great.

Blog 6:Standing Female Figure

MX;State of Tamaulipas, Huastec culture
Early Postclassic period, c A.D. 900-1250
Sandstone

The first thing that stood out for me as I was looking at this figure was how short the dipiction is.  I know that there were and still are Indian tribes in Mexico that had short people, for example the Tarahumara.
